PhD in Digital Media

The Doctoral Program in Digital Media – is a partnership between the UNL (Universidade Nova de Lisboa) and the UP (Universidade do Porto), with the support of the UT Austin (University of Texas in Austin, United States) and aims to train researchers, university teachers and innovation leaders in fundamental and applied areas associated with Digital Media.

The program emerges from the recent development of new applications in the area of digital media such as video games, interactive content on the Web, interactive TV, video on demand, new educational software with high impact among the young generations and, more recently, the appearance of information, marketing and leisure content in mobile devices, demonstrate how important is the research on these new types of content and their close relationship with the technologies and their application.
It is now very clear that universities must contribute through the creation of professionals in these areas at all levels, including the doctoral level.

It is a 4-year PhD program, which is aimed at students with a Master’s degree (2nd cycle Bologna or pre-Bologna) in the areas of information/ communication sciences, multimedia, interactive design, and all scientific and technological areas that feed into digital media. Digital media is an area that is rapidly growing and has gained increasing importance in our daily lives. The students can choose to specialize in the following areas: the creation of audiovisual interactive content, technology, journalism, industry, targets, and markets.

Objectives

The Digital Media PhD program aims to train researchers, academics and leaders in innovative processes. This training will enable the conceptualization and development of digital products and services, having taken into account target audiences, contexts and goals relevant to several distribution channels.

How to apply:

In order to apply, you will need to write a research statement and find a supervisor at ITI. Please review the list of faculty, select the researcher whose subject is closest to your own, send him/her your research statement, and ask about his/her availability to supervise you.

Applications will be open to the following programs:

  • Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto from May 7 to 6 August 2018.
  •  Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the New University of Lisbon from April 23 to July 16, 2018.
  • Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the New University of Lisbon from April 23 to July 16, 2018.
